Choosing what to wear for a photography session can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. The right outfits can help you feel confident, comfortable, and completely yourself—while also creating timeless, beautiful images.Whether you’re preparing for family portraits, engagement photos, maternity pictures, senior portraits, or a personal branding session, these tips will help you plan outfits that photograph beautifully.
1. Choose Coordinating Colors—Not Matching Outfits. Your outfits don’t need to match exactly. In fact, when everyone wears the same color or pattern, photos can look less natural.Instead, choose colors that complement one another. Soft neutrals, earthy tones, muted blues, warm browns, creams, and subtle greens often work beautifully together.A simple color palette might include:Cream and beige Soft blue and gray Terracotta and ivory Olive green and tanNavy and white Dusty rose and neutral tones.Try choosing two or three main colors and building everyone’s outfits around them.
2. Consider the Location and Season. Your clothing should fit naturally with the setting of your session. For an outdoor session, consider the colors and textures around you. Light, neutral clothing may stand out beautifully against a darker wooded background, while rich earth tones can complement an autumn setting. Also think about the season:Spring: Soft colors, light layers, floral details Summer: Flowy dresses, linen, lightweight fabrics Fall: Sweaters, boots, warm neutrals, layered textures Winter: Coats, scarves, textured fabrics, and deeper colors Dressing appropriately for the weather will also help you stay comfortable and relaxed during your session.
3. Wear Something That Makes You Feel Confident! The most important thing to wear is something that makes you feel like yourself. Choose clothing that fits well, allows you to move comfortably, and reflects your personal style. If you feel uncomfortable in an outfit, that feeling may show in your photos. Before your session, try sitting, walking, and moving around in your outfit. Make sure you feel comfortable from every angle.
4. Avoid Distracting Patterns and Logos. Small, subtle patterns can photograph well, but large graphics, prominent logos, neon colors, and very busy prints may distract attention from you.If one person wears a pattern, keep the rest of the outfits relatively simple. This creates balance without making the photos look too coordinated.
5. Don’t Forget the Details! Small details can make a significant difference. Before your session, check: Shoes are clean and appropriate for the location. Clothing is steamed or ironed. Jewelry complements the outfit. Hair accessories are simple and intentional. Socks won’t show unexpectedly. Undergarments are not visible through clothing. Nails are clean and camera-ready! Bring a brush, lint roller, comfortable shoes, and any small touch-up items you may need. (Your photographer may have these as well!)
