Feeling awkward in front of the camera is completely normal. Most people aren’t professional models—and you don’t need to be. The best photographs usually happen when you feel comfortable, stay connected, and focus less on posing perfectly. Whether you’re planning a family session, engagement shoot, senior portraits, maternity session, or personal branding photos, these five tips will help you look and feel more natural.
1. Choose a Photographer You Trust Feeling comfortable with your photographer makes a huge difference. Before booking, look through their portfolio and read reviews to make sure their style and vibe feels like a good fit. A photographer who gives clear direction, creates a relaxed atmosphere, and takes time to get to know you can help you feel at ease. The goal isn’t to force perfect poses—it’s to create an environment where genuine expressions and interactions happen naturally.
2. Focus on Each Other—Not the Camera. One of the easiest ways to look natural is to stop thinking about the camera. During your session, try: Holding hands, Walking together, Sharing a private joke, Giving someone a gentle hug, Talking about your favorite memory, Looking at the person next to you, or Taking a slow, relaxed breath. These simple activities create real connection and often lead to more authentic smiles than simply saying “cheese.” For individual portraits, focus on something meaningful: your goals, a favorite place, or a positive thought. A relaxed mind often creates a more natural expression.
3. Keep Moving. Standing completely still can make almost anyone feel stiff. Movement gives your body something natural to do and creates more variety in your images. Try: Walking slowly, Swaying gently, Adjusting your jacket or hair Turning your shoulders, Sitting and shifting comfortably Twirling in a flowy outfit, or Leaning toward someone you love. Your photographer may ask you to repeat a movement several times. That’s normal—and some of the best images often happen between poses.
4. Relax Your Body Tension can show up in your shoulders, hands, jaw, and facial expression. Before a photo is taken, take a slow breath and consciously relax. A few quick reminders: Drop your shoulders, Unclench your jaw, Keep your hands relaxed, Bend your elbows slightly, Shift your weight naturally, Avoid pressing your arms tightly against your body, Let your expression change instead of holding one smile. If you’re unsure what to do with your hands, interact with your clothing, hold a bouquet, touch your partner’s arm, or place your hands gently in your pockets. (You can also ask your photographer- they may know a thing or two).
